BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana lawmakers are one step from removing most restrictions on which medical conditions are eligible for medical marijuana, allowing doctors to recommend the treatment for any patient they believe it would help.

The Senate voted 28-6 Wednesday for the expansion proposal from Rep. Larry Bagley of Stonewall, the Republican chairman of the House health committee. One final vote is required from the House, which overwhelmingly backed the measure earlier this month, before the bill can reach the governor’s desk. read more

THURSDAY, May 28, 2020 (HealthDay News) — Lots of people are using medical marijuana to treat their arthritis and other muscle aches and pains, often without consulting their doctor, a new study reports.

As many as 1 in 5 patients who consult an orthopedic surgeon for chronic musculoskeletal pain are using a cannabis product to treat them, Canadian researchers found.

“We found 20% had reported past or current use of cannabis with the specific intention to manage pain,” said study author Dr. Timothy Leroux, an orthopedic surgeon at the University of Toronto. “Not just recreational users, but patients who said, ‘I’m using cannabis because I want to improve pain with this condition.’ “ read more

Provider J.J. Thomas says he’s never believed that was the best option.

“No one wants to eat at McDonald’s every day, over and over again, when a thousand different places make hamburgers,” he said. “It’s the same with medication or anything else: people want variety, they want to shop at different places, they want accessibility.”

Thomas owns “The Higher Standard” dispensaries, with locations in Helena, Missoula, Butte and Dillon. He said he was pleased last month to hear that the state was “untethering” cardholders – allowing them to buy from any licensed provider in the state. read more
